David Jones, the now department-supermarket storeBY Mark Kirkland
Melbourne’s Malvern Central Shopping Centre have expanded its food retail offering by welcoming David Jones Food earlier this year.
The premium David Jones food concept is the department store’s first food concept to launch in Victoria, marking a fresh and exciting new direction for food retail in the state. The innovative food offering was sourced and developed by a team of 60 specialist food engineers and delivers high-class products in categories such as meat and poultry, prepared and semi-prepared fresh fruit and vegetables, salads, quality to-go meals, pantry items, confectionary and wine.
The AMPCSC Recommended Retail Practice Report 2017 found that both locally and globally shopping centres are shifting from being transactional environments to destinations that provide shoppers with opportunities to relax, socialise and dine. The research indicates that 82% of shoppers would spend as much or more on food experiences that were designed to provide opportunities to relax. In addition, over 50% of shoppers aged between 18-29 years old wanted to see things like rooftop bars and in-centre dining introduced in shopping centres, which further highlights that consumers are increasingly looking to shopping centres as lifestyle and entertainment destinations.
